How to get Google Sitelinks on your site's search results

It seems that it is completely automated and left to the whims of google algorithms. But I am told the following is helpful in getting some automated:

for each link you want to show up in sitelinks, make the link appear twice on every page of your website... for example put the things you wish to appear in sitelinks not only in your nav but in a footer nav as well.

you can also go into google webmaster tools now and block certain sitelinks from being the one to show up.
