10 Quick Tips for Optimizing your SEO

  1. Meta Title
This is possibly one of the most important factors in your search engine rank. You don't want too many words. You want the title to properly represent the page it is attached to. You want the first two or three words to be your target keywords. I find for local businesses the city name in the first couple words is highly helpful especially with Google Places. Wasting the title with your company name that may not be very well known seems to be unhelpful.
  2. Submit
May seem obvious - but they arent going to find you if you don't tell them you are there.... so go to google.com, click about google, click submit your site, and plug in. Also create yourself a google places account so you can come up on local searches.
  3. Content
One of the most important things to do if you really want to rank high in search results is to become a CONTENT CREATION BEAST. And I don't mean spam. I mean you want to have as much valuable original information that you can on your website. For example - a blog on your website that gives tutorials or tips or information for your customers or potential customers. To have continuously updated, original content on your website is one of the most important things and would probably trump everything else.
  4. Google Analytics
If you really want to improve your SEO you will want to create an analytics account with Google. From here you can see where your traffic is coming from, even down to how each sale/goal on your website is reached and how that particular person found you. I can't imagine succeeding in SEO without this. Also check out webmaster.google.com
  5. Text
One of the biggest mistakes you can do on your website is to build your website with images/pictures/video rather than plain old text. Though there are ways to implant keywords in rich media if you don't have the text to support it, containing your keywords, you may as well throw in the towel.
  6. Focus on End User
I often hear people say - I want to be at the top - I want to be number 1 for this search term. Well - what are you going to do with the person when you get them there. In the end your search results will have a lot more to do with how people react to your site than how you got them there. You can spend all the money in the world on Adword campaigns, but if once they get to your site they don't like what they see - then you may as well put that money in an envelope and mail it to me. I could use it better :) The answer is to provide original updated valuable information for the end user and present it in a way that makes sense to them.
  7. External Links - Become a cool kid
One of the top things search engines like google consider when they determine your ranking is who likes you. What websites think you are worthy. What is the ranking of those websites that think you are worthy. Its the cool kid factor. If you are friends with the cool kid, you become a cool kid too. Be careful - linking schemes can get you blacklisted. The trick is to provide valuable content that people want to link to. The trick is to create relationships with other people who your site is either valuable to them or their users. This is the hardest thing but also the most helpful thing you can do.
  8. Link up where you can
If you have profiles on other sites link up. Anywhere that you have control over information on other (especially more popular sites) - link up. Create yourself twitter, facebook, blogspot accounts and make sure you link up. But also - provide valuable original content on those websites or promises of that when you link And fulfill your promises, or they won't come back. Social networks are a wonderful way to drive traffic to your website.
  9. Logical Navigation
A very important part of how the search engines will scan your site is how easy is it for their search engines to crawl you. Is your navigation the same on every page, is it highlighted and separated in a way for the crawler and your end user to navigate? I also recommend putting your navigation on two places on the website.
  10. Highlight your headings
Make sure to H1 and bold the headings on your pages. This helps both the search crawlers and your end users find what they are looking for quicker. Also helps seo for the keywords in your headings.

GOOD LUCK!
